Through my life, two things have remained constant; my love for cake, and my nickname, Wendy Woo.
Let’s start with cake. As a child I loved visiting my grandparents. I would sit in my grandma’s dining room for hours and watch her as she created wedding cakes, birthday cakes and hundreds of fudge Easter eggs. I would sit in awe at her artistry and attention to detail. Later in life, I asked if she could teach me to decorate cakes. She gladly obliged and we began lessons. I loved the time that I spent with her. She was in her 80’s and legally blind, but could still make a perfect icing rose and she could have written a dissertation on icing consistency. Since then I have expanded my knowledge and abilities, but I think of her each time I turn on the oven.
As for Wendy Woo, I can’t remember a time in my life when I was not Wendy Woo, or just Woo to my mom, grandma, sisters, aunts, and close friends. For me, my nickname brings back memories of warm welcomes and great conversation. The sights and smells of cake continually flood my mind with memories from my childhood and remind me of great celebrations, quiet chats and the warmth of family and friends.
